Assistant Teacher – Autism Learning Center
Assists the Autism Learning Center teachers, Intervention Team, therapists, and other program personnel in providing an effective specialized Preschool through 2nd Grade experience for children with Autism to maximize the learning, speech, language, social, cognitive, and motor development of each child. Programming is guided by the student’s IEP requirements, ODE Academic Content Standards, the program’s credentialing with the Ohio Department of Education (ODE) Autism Scholarship program (ASP) and the mission and vision of Abilities First.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assists the teachers, therapists, and Intervention Team in carrying out the Individual Education Plan (IEP), and long- and short-term therapeutic goals and any applicable Behavior Support Plans for each child in the class.
- Provides and orderly, clean, attractive, safe, and inviting classroom environment for the children. Sets up for and cleans up after classroom lessons and activities.
- Assists teachers in implementing activities for children to enhance general learning and speech, language, cognitive, social/behavioral and motor development.
- Actively participates in all activities during the school day, including assisting with the children’s activities of daily living, toileting, changing, snack, and lunchtime.
- Attends in-services and seminars for professional growth and presents the information as appropriate.
- Develops and maintains effective relationship with all stakeholders, focusing on exceeding customer expectations and Abilities First community image.
- Performs other duties as deemed necessary by the Director of Autism Learning Center.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
FORMAL EDUCATION/TRAINING
Associate Degree or 48 semester credit hours/72 quarter credit hours required.
CERTIFICATION, REGISTRATION AND/OR LICENSURE
Valid driver’s license, proof of insurance and ability to transport clients in agency vans (per regulatory and agency policy stipulations) required.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
Must be at least 18 years of age. Experience with preschool and elementary school aged children, children with developmental disabilities and children with Autism preferred. Must be able to move freely and quickly around the physical environment, including on and off the floor; be physically able to lift and position children up to forty (40) pounds unassisted.
